A shell and tube heat exchanger is a widely used heat transfer device, mainly composed of a shell, tube sheet, heat exchange tubes, head, baffle plates, etc. The tube bundle is fixed at both ends on the tube sheet, and the tubes can be expanded or welded to the tube sheet. The tube bundle is placed inside the shell, and both ends are sealed with heads and fixed with flanges
 
One fluid flows through the inside of the tubes, and the other flows outside the tubes. The space between the two heads and the tube sheet is used to distribute and collect the fluid inside the tubes. The two fluids exchange heat through the tube wall. The channel through which the fluid passes inside the heat exchange tube and its connected part are called the tube side; the channel through which the fluid flows outside the heat exchange tube and its connected part are called the shell side.

Shell and tube heat exchangers are widely used in various industrial fields such as chemical engineering, petroleum, power, and food due to their advantages of high efficiency, reliability, and wide adaptability. They can be used as heaters, coolers, condensers, evaporators, re - boilers, etc.
